Even if you attend Aikido classes and trainings faithfully and diligently week by week, it may still take you quite a long time to reach your goal. For one, you don’t practice the art in the dojo for one whole day, as most classes are designed to last only a few hours per session and occurring only a few days each week. For instance, if your Aikido class lasts for 2 hours, around 20-30 minutes of that will be eaten up by warm-up exercises to prepare your mind and body for the training, and then the next 30 minutes may take the techniques’ correct form, mindset and attitude. The next hour may be spent on theory and practical application of the skills and techniques, and the classes are over.
So, with that limited span of time, is it still possible to speed up your mastery in Aikido even just a little bit? Of course, there still is, and it does not entail dedicating your entire time to the art, if you still want to savor the other pleasures of life. You can actually speed up your mastery a little at a time in the comfort of your home.
Now, how do you practice aikido at home and your training partners? You can work on the postures, form and movements at home, if your space permits. If you wish to avoid breaking your stuff at home, you may practice on your lawn where you will feel freer to move around. There are still a lot of techniques that you can slowly perform alone and master even without the supervision of your teacher.
If you want, you can also have a partner to practice the techniques whenever it suits you. You don’t have to be aggressive in practicing, though, especially that you don’t have a teacher supervising you and a safe environment to practice. Think about the movements often, practice slowly and work through them as much as you can, and you will inevitably progress faster despite this seemingly simple routine.
